School of Distinction Award

Superintendent Mike Nelson was notified today that Southwood Elementary was named Washington State School of Distinction for the second year in a row. Originally awarded by OSPI, this award is now sponsored by Washington State Kappan and Center for Education and was based upon test score improvements over the last five years and moving students up on each of the performance levels (level one to two, two to three and three to four).

Southwood is one of 55 elementary schools winners and is one of 16 repeat winners!

Principal Susan Arbury made the announcement to her staff this afternoon (see photo below).

The school district will receive an official letter in the mail next week that outlines additional information about the award. It will also share information regarding the official awards ceremony.
