YEAS and Nelson Receive Regional Awards - Updated 5/21 at 12:30

From all of the individuals and groups recognized for their work in communities in the Puget Sound area at the annual WASA Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 18th, the YEAS Committee won the Regional Community Recognition Award for their incredible work.  The following application was submitted by Superintendent Mike Nelson earlier this spring:

For years, there was conversation regarding renovation of the local football stadium located at the King County Fair Grounds and affectionately referred to as “our pasture” by the Enumclaw High School students and community.  For over 60 years, the stadium was the heart and symbol of Hornet Football. Regardless of the time and effort that went in to maintaining the field, one never knew what conditions would be encountered on game night.  The field was in such poor condition due to weather and over-use that the last home football games of one season had to be played on other high school fields in the area.

In the spring of 2008, then Mayor John Wise decided it was time to bring the renovation talk to fruition and began to gather a committee now known as YEAS who would begin the arduous process of planning and fundraising for an all-weather synthetic multi-sports turf field.  The committee consisted of representatives from the City of Enumclaw, Enumclaw School District, and the community.  Unflagging leaders in the process were former Mayor John Wise, District Board Director Chris VanHoof, Carl Sanders, Jeff Coats, Steve Moergeli, Don Bartel, and local attorney, Rick Bathum.  Local construction businessman, Carl Sanders, was strategic in the process, donating an enormous amount of time, equipment and materials to manage the project.  This remarkable community effort culminated in the completion of a beautiful new turf field in late August 2011, just in time for the first football game of the 2011-12 season.  The stadium is now a multi-sport field, designed to accommodate soccer, youth football, high school football, lacrosse, rugby and other sports programs, open 7 days a week year round! The Enumclaw School District has entered into a land lease agreement with the City of Enumclaw and now leads the use of this spectacular facility.

To think that a collaborative project like this could occur during the most difficult economic times in decades is quite amazing.  The effects of this collaboration of the YEAS Committee, the city, school district, and community will be felt for generations to come!  It is with a grateful heart that we honor YEAS.

We are thrilled that the tireless work of the YEAS Committee has received the recognition they so richly deserve.  Congratulations!

At the same luncheon, Superintendent Mike Nelson received the Award of Merit in recognition of his effective leadership in public education and for significant contributions to educational administration.  Congratulations to Mr. Nelson for the recognition he received from his colleagues!

Performing at the ceremony today was the Enumclaw High School Coro di Uomo men’s choir who entertained the group with several songs.  Thanks to Choir Director Paul Scott and the men’s choir.  We appreciate the great job you did!  Enumclaw was well represented at today’s event.
