Sunrise Students Earn First Place at Dance Competition - Updated 5/22

Information contributed by Sunrise Principal, Chris Beals and Sunrise teacher, Marsha Henderson:

All our 5th grade classes had the opportunity this year to participate in the Dancing Classrooms program. This national program brings a dancing artist-in-residence to our school for ten weeks, thanks to the donations of various successful grant applications. A culminating celebration of our student’s work in this area was held a few weeks back where our students shared their learning, their thoughts, and their dance moves for families and community members.

From this dance program, a number of Sunrise students were selected to represent our school in a regional ballroom dance competition with students from other schools. This competition, named the Colors of the Rainbow competition, was held last Saturday, May 19 at Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way, and our team received the Grand Gold trophy (first place). We are proud of the following 5th grade dancers who represented our school in this competition:

Ruby A. - Tyler C.
Josh C. - Josh G.
Nolan H. - Makenzie H.
Avery I. - Reyna L.
Megan L. - Emma M.
Noah S. - Sky T.

Our 12 students did an EXCEPTIONAL job! They proudly represented our school! Congratulations to all our students for their accomplishments in the area of ballroom dancing.

We would like to thank the following staff members who continually supported this project, JoAnn Amberg, Marsha Henderson, Diane Hammons, and Nancy Tubbs.

We would like to also thank the Enumclaw Schools Foundation who gave a grant to bring Dancing Classrooms to Sunrise Elementary as well as funding from Target Corporation and the Muckleshoot Charity Fund.
