Sunrise and Southwood named "Reward Schools" for high progress!

Superintendent Mike Nelson received information from Olympia with the news that Sunrise Elementary and Southwood Elementary have been named “Reward Schools” by the OSPI! “I am so very proud and happy for the students, staff, parents and community of both Sunrise Elementary and Southwood Elementary. They have worked tirelessly to meet the needs of all students." Only 69 schools across the state of Washington received this designation this year.

Reward schools are classified either as “highest-performing schools” or “high-progress schools.” A high-progress school is a Title I school in the top 10 percent of Title I schools in Reading and Math, combined, for three years.

The list of newly identified schools was determined using the same methodology (approved by the U.S. Department of Education) as was used to identify the first group of Reward, Priority, Focus, and Emerging schools. Data on state assessments in reading and mathematics and graduation rates from the 2009–10, 2010–11, and 2011–12 school years were incorporated into the calculations for newly identified schools. This is the second consecutive year that Sunrise Elementary was identified as a Title One Reward School!
