Election Filing Information for Districts 2 & 5 Open Board Positions

The following information is from the King County Elections Office.

It is extremely important to notify King County Elections immediately when vacancies occur. The date of the vacancy determines when that office will appear on the ballot, and our office must be notified by the deadline.

In order for an office that is not scheduled for election this year to appear on the ballot, King County Elections must be notified of the vacancy no later than Sunday, May 12, 2013. Declarations of candidacy for that office will be accepted during the regularly scheduled filing period of May 13-17, 2013. If Elections is not notified by the deadline, the office will not be subject to election this year.

If the vacancy occurs after the candidate filing period has started, candidate filings for that office will not be accepted this year. The appointee to the vacancy will serve until the next succeeding general election that the office is allowed by law to have an election (November 2015).

One of the requirements for holding office is being an active, registered voter of the jurisdiction. Before making an appointment, provide our office with the list of potential appointees. Our staff will verify whether those individuals are registered voters, ensuring that requirement is met.

Once an appointment is made, notify our office in writing as soon as possible. An email is sufficient, a mailed letter is not required.
