Marysville-Pilchuck High School Incident

Back

10/24/2014

Superintendent Mike Nelson sent the following letter to families in response to today's incident at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Dear Families,

On behalf of the Enumclaw School District we would like to extend our thoughts to the families, friends and education community of Marysville. This is a terrible tragedy for their community and for our state.

We want you to know there is nothing more important to all of us than the safety of our children. The purpose of this letter is to let you know that as a school system, we not only look at this tragedy with sadness, but we look at it through the lens of continuing to prepare our own system for all types of emergencies that could occur when students are in school.

Our school system has outlined emergency procedures for fire and earthquake that are practiced in various situations on a regular basis. We also have defined “lock-down” procedures that are practiced with students and staff. It is the lock-down procedure that we would use in one of our schools if there was a situation that warranted all students and staff to be secured. This procedure insures a way for communication and for the accounting of students and staff.

Our police departments have current, detailed maps of all of our buildings and we have a communication system that directly links us to the police for emergency purposes. In recent meetings with law enforcement at each of our school sites, we have implemented emergency procedures and facilitated additional safety measures. We continue to work together as a school district and law enforcement agencies in providing our students with the safest environment possible.

Let us move forward from today’s events as a united school district community working together in providing a safe environment while our children are in school and out in the community.

In partnership with you,

Mike Nelson Superintendent
