Autism Awareness Day at TMMS

"Our School Lights up with Blue" was the theme this year on April 1st at Thunder Mountain Middle School because April is Autism Awareness Month. On Friday, April 1st, the whole school wore bracelets that were generously donated by a TMMS parent. The usual lively lunch time was quiet with engaged students watching videos about Autism and wearing stickers that boasted the “Light up with Blue” motto.

Why puzzle pieces? Autism, which is a neurological disorder that affects about 1 percent of the world population, is complicated and each person with Autism is different. More than 3.5 million Americans live with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and prevalence in the United States is estimated at 1 in 68 births. (CDC, 2014).

At Thunder Mountain Middle School, 8th grader K. Fleming and 7th grader K. Hardman show off puzzle pieces decorated by students.
