Andy Means Named Southwood Elementary School Principal



Following a rigorous process that included a thorough application process, oral and written interviews, staff and community meetings, an extensive reference review and a final interview with Superintendent Mike Nelson, Andy Means, current Assistant Principal at Orting High School in the Orting School District has been named Southwood Elementary School Principal. Andy steps into the position following Susan Arbury who will assume leadership of the new early childhood education and Title programs in the district. Andy’s official start date will be July 1, 2016.

Andy returns to the district after being hired in the Orting School District in 2014. As high school assistant principal, Andy has been involved in improving instruction, creating a culture, closing the gap, engaging communities, and ensuring school safety among other roles. Prior to his Orting experience, Andy was the Administrative TOSA at Enumclaw Middle School 2013-14 where he taught math from 2006-14. He also served as athletic director and coached. Prior to coming to Enumclaw, Andy taught at Tillicum Middle School in Bellevue, Sammamish High School, and in the Dominican Republic. Andy brings excellent training in the evaluation process; professional development to support children of trauma and poverty; and has participated in various workshops for state assessments. Andy earned his administrative credential from University of Washington-Tacoma in 2014. He also was awarded his National Board Certification in Math. Andy’s Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Math and Spanish were completed at the University of Washington.

Andy’s current superintendent says, “(Andy is) one of the finest people I’ve met in my professional career.” One of Andy’s teachers was quoted, “Easily one of the most insightful administrators that I have ever worked with.” Andy is excited to make a long-term commitment to Enumclaw and the Southwood community!
