Early Entry

Kindergarten

No later than August 1st, a parent or guardian may request an exemption for a child whose birth date falls after August 31st but before November 1st. The superintendent or his/her designee shall establish a screening and assessment process for the purpose of determining reliable estimates of the child's skills and abilities. Such estimates shall assist personnel in making a determination that there is substantial reason to expect successful performance in kindergarten.

Parents requesting an exemption may provide to the district the results of an assessment using the instruments and processes approved by the superintendent and conducted by a licensed or certified psychologist. If the assessment is conducted by district staff a fee not to exceed $150 may be charged.

If assigned district personnel determine there is substantial reason to expect success in kindergarten, the exemption shall be granted.

First Grade

Exemptions regarding entrance to first grade shall be determined by the building principal following review of available information.

Appeals

In the event an exemption is denied, a conditional exemption is withdrawn, or a screening fee waiver is denied, the parent shall be promptly notified of the reasons and of the opportunity to have the decisions reviewed in the manner provided by the district's policy on citizen complaints.
