Early Entry
Kindergarten
No later than May 1, 2009, a parent or guardian may request an exemption for a child whose 5th birthday falls after August 31st, (the cutoff for Kindergarten) and by November 1st of the upcoming school year. For the 2009-2010 school year this would target any child whose birthday falls between the dates of September 1, 2004 through November 1, 2004. The superintendent or his/her designee shall establish a screening and assessment process for the purpose of determining reliable estimates of the child's skills and abilities. Such estimates shall assist personnel in making a determination that there is substantial reason to expect successful performance in kindergarten.
The exemption will be based on an assessment conducted by a certified/licensed Psychologist. The district charges a fee of $150 for the testing, which is to be paid by the child's family.
If assigned district personnel determine there is substantial reason to expect success in kindergarten, the exemption shall be granted.
First Grade
Exemptions regarding entrance to first grade shall be determined by the building principal following review of available information.
Appeals
In the event an exemption is denied, a conditional exemption is withdrawn, or a screening fee waiver is denied, the parent shall be promptly notified of the reasons and of the opportunity to have the decisions reviewed in the manner provided by the district's policy on citizen complaints.
