National History Day Results

Three eighth grade students from Thunder Mountain Middle School traveled to the University of Maryland for the National History Day competition in June. E Frerichs and J Fish finished eighth and H Nelson earned 11th place. This was the first trip to the national competition for Fish and Nelson, but Frerichs finished fifth last year at the national level.

Frerichs and Fish joined forces this year to put together a group exhibit on Operation Babylift, when close to 3,000 infants and children were airlifted out of Vietnam in 1975 after the fall of Saigon.

Nelson individually competed in performance portraying Walter Cronkite, JFK and Nikita Khrushchev during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Thunder Mountain teacher Shirley Rhodes was honored as Western Region National History Day Teacher of the Year. She was one of seven finalists for the national award. The Western Region consists of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Alaska and Hawaii. Earlier in the year she was also named Washington State History Day Teacher of the Year.

Congratulations to all!
