Hometown Hero Award

The Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce hosted their Thanks for Giving appreciation dinner to recognize businesses, organizations and individuals for their contributions to our community. Our long-time board member and a previous president, Nancy Merrill, was one of those recognized for her work in our community. She received the Hometown Hero award in the individual winner category! The letter below was written to honor Nancy.

Nancy Merrill: has made herself a vital part of the Enumclaw community since her move to the area as a young wife and mother. Nancy volunteered regularly in her children’s classrooms and was active in the Kibler/J.J. Smith PTA. She also spent additional time tutoring a severely learning-disabled boy within the special education setting. Nancy became involved in the school levy process and worked tirelessly as chairperson of several levy and bond campaigns. Her desire to volunteer continued as Nancy joined the Enumclaw School District Board of Directors in 1991, where she continues to remain an active member. She has spent 15 years diligently working to improve the Enumclaw school system for the benefit of our children and greater community. During Nancy’s tenure on the board, the schools have made new curriculum adoptions and now have stronger district-wide curriculum based instruction. Although the reinvention of our schools has presented many challenges, Nancy’s belief in the long-term benefits of change fuel her desire to remain a school board member. She is one of the longest serving board members in Enumclaw School District history. That takes dedication! Her volunteer work extends, as she is the Volunteer Coordinator for the Franciscan Improving Care through the End of Life program. In 2001, Nancy started the non-profit “Respecting Choices” program, which later became “Honor My Wishes”. This is an all-volunteer organization, which has worked to involve our community members in end of life advance directives. Nancy, with her volunteers, has created and published a comprehensive end-of-life planning tool, which has received critical acclaim across the state. Nancy has remained president of Honor My Wishes since its inception. Nancy Merrill is a person who fully lives out her beliefs. She is a person of action, not just talk. Although Nancy’s volunteer positions have been stressful at times, she has continued her work wanting to make the community of Enumclaw the best she can and she has, Thank you Nancy.

Our community would not be what it is today without you.
Thank you for your caring and interactive spirit.

Special recognition this year is awarded this year to our winner
