Sunday Evening News (Monday Edition)

May 29, 2006
Assistant Superintendent Mike Nelson writes to all staff each Sunday evening. This is his latest letter.

I hope that each of you had a wonderful four-day holiday!

Two weeks from today in the EHS Library, we will be honoring our retiring staff members. This retirement tea is co-sponsored by our EEA, PSE, Enumclaw Area Chamber of Commerce and our school district. The event will occur from 3:00-5:00 with a program honoring our retiring staff at 4:15. This is one of my favorite events of the year. I love to hear the many stories that our retirees have to share, see and meet the families that have supported these staff members and reflect on the impact that these individuals have had on the lives of their students.

Reflect upon the following:
* A high school teacher that sees 150 students per day (teaching 5 periods) for 30 years will teach 4500 students.
* A bus driver transporting 75 students each day for 25 years will transport 1875 students.
* An elementary teacher will teach approximately 750 students in a 30-year career.

Pretty amazing numbers, don't you think? I hope that each of you will write June 12th from 3:00-5:00 on your calendar and will plan to attend this event for our colleagues. Sometimes I hear that educators are not honored like they should be. I would love to seek more ways in which we can publicly honor the wonderful ways that each of you contribute to our system. June 12th is a day of honoring colleagues that we do have control over. Let's build a culture within the Enumclaw School District where we (all of us) honor each other for the contributions that are made to our system for students. Honoring our retirees at this yearly tea is just one way to build a strong, positive culture throughout our system.

Until next week, Happy Learning!
