Principal's Message
Westwood Elementary School is a Professional Learning Community. We are committed to creating an environment that supports mutual cooperation and personal growth as we work together to accomplish what we cannot do alone. Our vision in the following areas guides our work together.
School Climate - Westwood is committed to creating a welcoming, safe, caring environment that supports the success of students and staff.
Best Practices - Learn and apply the best practices for improving instruction in all of our classrooms. Staff members participate in staff development, read professional books, and visit classrooms to improve their skills. This year our focus is on math instruction. All our classroom teachers participated in three days of training in "Best Practices" in math.
Data Based Decision Making - Collect and use data on student achievement to measure improvement and inform instruction.
Collaboration - Classroom teachers participate in a collaborative group weekly focusing on student work and student learning. While teachers are collaborating, students participate in a variety of learning activities including: counseling lessons, art history/ceramics, Spanish, library and math games.
Pyramid of Interventions - Support all students through a variety of systems including prevention, intervention and enrichment.
Families - Build close working relationships with families to enhance student achievement and promote positive relationships.
Leadership - Staff members take on a variety of leadership roles throughout the school.
We are fortunate at Westwood to have a very involved group of parents. On any given day, one will find volunteers helping with instruction throughout our school. Parents and staff work collaboratively on several projects including art, Spanish and playground improvements. Our PTA also sponsors community events such as skating parties and movie nights, provides assemblies and helps with field trips. Our dedicated staff and involved parents continue to contribute to making Westwood a great place for kids!
Mission Statement
Westwood Elementary School is a cooperative partnership of students, staff, parents, and community members working together to enable all students to become responsible, self-sufficient citizens who are able to succeed today and in tomorrow's world.
