State Testing Information

In our school district, and in schools across the country, students will take part in a set of new assessments this year called the Smarter Balanced assessments. This year in Washington state, these assessments are the required tests given to students in grades 3-8 and to 10th and 11th grade high-school students and test them in the areas of English Language Arts (Reading & Writing) and Mathematics. Students continue to take the Measurement of Student Progress in Science at grades 5 and 8. Additionally, high school students take End-of-Course Assessments (EOC) in Math and Science as a state graduation requirement.

The Smarter Balanced assessments were field-tested in our school district in the spring of 2014, as well as in districts across the country. These assessments are aligned to the new Washington Learning Standards and are administered to most grade levels in an online format on the computer. Students take part in practice with this online system prior to the final assessments to gain confidence with this new way of taking an assessment.
