State Testing Information

In our school district, and in schools across the country, students will take part in a set of assessments called the Smarter Balanced assessments. This year in Washington state, these assessments are the required tests given to students in grades 3-8 and to 10th grade high-school students in the areas of English Language Arts (Reading & Writing) and Mathematics. Additionally, students in grades 5, 8 and 11 will take our state’s new Science assessment called the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).

The Smarter Balanced assessments were field-tested in our school district in the spring of 2014, as well as in districts across the country. These assessments are aligned to the new Washington Learning Standards and are administered to students in an online format on the computer. Students take part in practice with this online system prior to the final assessments to gain confidence with this method of taking an assessment.
