It was almost the summer of 2008, and three Southwood Elementary teachers had an idea. They had participated in the Arts Impact Teacher Training Summer Institutes for the past three summers. They felt compelled to share the incredible arts instruction backgrounds and lessons they had experienced with all teachers, so more students would benefit from high quality arts experiences in the classroom on a regular basis. They knew that having a core curriculum in the arts would increase the ability of teachers to provide these experiences, and the likelihood of them taking place. So, they thought, why not spend their fourth summer at the Institute compiling a curriculum for Enumclaw?

The idea of creating a core curriculum was quickly embraced by the school principal, the Grant Manager for the City of Enumclaw Artists in Our Schools Grant, and the Arts Impact Summer Institute Directors and Teaching Artists. Support was put in place, including a consultant in each arts discipline, a place to work at the Tacoma Art Museum, oversight from Arts Impact Directors, and funding from the Artists in Our Schools Grant.

The decision was made to make integrating art and math a focus for this first effort. Lessons were compiled for each grade, K-5, with a sequential scope and sequence for the year. Art disciplines used include dance, visual art, and drama. Art lessons are rigorous, in that they address the Washington State Essential Learnings for art. The lessons also preserve the core content of each of the art and other disciplines involved. Each lesson has a specific set of criteria to teach relative to the disciplines, and these criteria are used to evaluate the process and product.

Now, we are excited to post the curriculum online, in order to increase access to this wonderful work. Our hope is that more quality art experiences will blossom in every classroom in Enumclaw! Our goal is to add curriculum as time allows, but at least we have a start.

Our deepest gratitude is extended to Jody Emerson, Laura Johnson, and Faith Lindley, Southwood Elementary teachers and curriculum editors; Sibyl Barnum, Susy Watts, Meredith Essex, Jo Petroff, and Dave Quicksall, Arts Impact consultants; Gary LaTurner, Enumclaw Arts Commission/Artists in Our Schools Grant Manager, and Susan Arbury, Southwood Elementary Principal and Grant Writer, for their creation and support of this curriculum project.
