All descriptors must be evident.

Writing Characteristics

  • Contains most high frequency words spelled correctly.
  • Contains the substance (meaningful thoughts) of several sentences on a related topic even though it may not be accurately  punctuated.
  • Simple sentences are usually punctuated correctly.
  • More varied and complex sentence structures are included (including conjunctions, prepositional phrases, and/or relative clauses).
  • Beginning words in sentences, names, and the pronoun “I” are usually capitalized.
  • Lower case letters are used appropriately.
  • Subject verb agreement used most of the time.
  • Words are spaced appropriately.

Writer Behaviors

  • Uses larger correctly spelled vocabulary; may use phonetic spelling for advanced words.
  • Selects a wide range of topics for writing.
