All descriptors must be evident.

Writing Characteristics

  • Contains most high frequency words spelled correctly.
  • Contains a rich and descriptive vocabulary.
  • Contains the substance (meaningful thoughts) of several.
  • Maintains focus on a topic.
  • Contains a variety of sentence structures and length.
  • Simple sentences contain correct end punctuation and capitalization.

Writer Behaviors

  • Groups ideas, sometimes in paragraphs.
  • Uses larger correctly spelled vocabulary; may use phonetic spelling for unfamiliar or advanced words.
  • Usually uses advanced print conventions appropriately (quotation marks, commas, apostrophes, exclamation marks, contractions, possessives) though they may be inconsistent.
  • Uses regular verb endings (ed, ing, d, es, etc.)
