JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE ENUMCLAW SCHOOL BOARD AND SUPT. SHAUN CAREY
ENUMCLAW — Jan. 12, 2026 — The Enumclaw School District Board of Directors and Superintendent Shaun Carey today announced a mutual decision to part ways, according to Board Chair Tyson Gamblin. The decision will be effective Jan. 12, 2026; Carey’s last day with the district will also be Jan. 12, 2026.
“On behalf of the Enumclaw Board of Directors, I want to thank Dr. Carey for his service to the staff, students and families of the Enumclaw School District,” said Gamblin. “The Board appreciates his leadership on several initiatives in the district. We are particularly grateful for his efforts to continue feasibility work around the construction of a new elementary school in Black Diamond” Gamblin added. “Dr. Carey has been a driving force behind making certain all students experience a sense of belonging in our schools and that we are using research-based tools to measure and monitor student progress throughout the school year.”
“Dr. Carey’s commitment to ensuring the success of all students is to be commended and we wish him the best in his next venture,” he added.
Reflecting on his time with the district, Carey also expressed gratitude for the time spent collaborating with educators on behalf of student success.
“I am thankful for so many opportunities during my tenure here in Enumclaw,” said Carey. “Most of all, I am grateful for the work we have done to put systemwide structures — including common school schedules, MTSS practices, and progress monitoring — in place throughout the school district. This will help to ensure that student growth and success is consistently monitored and accurately responded to,” he said.
“It has been an honor to serve as the Enumclaw superintendent.”
The district will announce its plans for the superintendent search process in the coming weeks.
As we move forward, families can expect continuity and stability across our schools:
The Enumclaw School District Board of Directors has asked Deputy Superintendent Jill Burnes to serve as Interim Superintendent for the remainder of the school year.
In the coming weeks, the Board will begin planning for the superintendent search process. This process will include meaningful opportunities for staff, students, and community members to share their input and perspectives.
Please know that day-to-day operations in our schools will continue as planned, and our commitment to student learning and well-being remains unchanged. We are grateful for the strong partnership we share with our families and community, and we will continue to communicate as additional information becomes available.
