Outside grant funding will reimburse completed roof repair work at Byron Kibler Elementary and support indoor air quality assessments and cybersecurity improvements across the district.
Enumclaw School District has been awarded three grants totaling $785,079, bringing outside funding into the district to help offset costs for facility repairs, indoor air quality work, and cybersecurity improvements.
The largest grant, $377,300 through the OSPI FP 502 Urgent Repair Grant, will reimburse the district for roof repair work completed earlier this school year at Byron Kibler Elementary.
After applying for this grant in previous years, the district was selected this year for funding for the Byron Kibler roof repair project. Byron Kibler Elementary, originally built in 1953, has required ongoing roof maintenance as the roof has exceeded its expected lifespan. Despite patching and repairs, leaks continued to affect the learning environment and required frequent attention.
After the April 2025 maintenance levy did not pass, the need to address ongoing roof issues at Byron Kibler Elementary remained. The district responded by using existing funds for a reduced-scope restoration focused on the most critical areas rather than the full restoration originally proposed. The project was designed to stop regular leaks and extend the useful life of the roof for at least the next five years. The work included replacing damaged insulation, resealing seams, reinforcing drains, and applying protective coatings. The completed work includes a five-year warranty on the restored roof sections, along with annual inspections.
The district was also awarded $271,021 through an Indoor Air Quality Grant. This funding will support assessments of indoor air quality across district facilities and help the district identify any needed improvements to ventilation systems, air flow, filtration, and overall environmental conditions in schools.
In addition, Enumclaw School District was selected for funding through the FY24 State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program. The district received $8,723 for phishing email training for staff and $128,035 for firewall deployment with XDR integration, a technology improvement that helps identify and respond to potential cyber threats. Together, these cybersecurity projects will strengthen protections for district systems, staff accounts, and student information.
“These grants help us address necessary work while reducing pressure on local resources,” said Phil Engebretsen, ESD Director of Facilities, Operations and Athletics. “We are grateful for this funding and for the opportunity to complete work that supports both day-to-day operations and long-term district stewardship.”
Grant funding enables the district to address necessary facility, environmental, and technology needs. From urgent repairs to air quality assessments and cybersecurity upgrades, each award supports Enumclaw School District’s commitment to financial stewardship and safe learning environments for students and staff.
