Enumclaw School District’s new superintendent begins his service with a commitment to listening, visibility and strong relationships across our schools and communities.
Dr. Mark Wenzel officially took the oath of office as superintendent of the Enumclaw School District during the July 27 Board of Directors meeting. His contract began July 1, and he immediately began implementing an entry plan centered on listening, learning and building relationships throughout the district and community.
In his first month, Wenzel conducted more than 50 scheduled interviews with staff, students, families, community members and local leaders. These interviews provided opportunities to learn about the history, strengths and aspirations of the Enumclaw School District and its local schools.
Wenzel brings 16 years of superintendent experience to ESD, but he has emphasized that he is entering the role first as a learner.
Three consistent themes have emerged from his early conversations:
Enumclaw is a place with a proud history, many generational families, and a deep connection to its schools.
Teachers, principals, and support staff love what they do and believe deeply in the potential of every student.
There is a deep commitment to working together to make learning opportunities even richer for students.
Wenzel and his family recently purchased and moved into a home near Byron Kibler Elementary School and are looking forward to putting down roots in the community. One of his first community experiences as superintendent was participating in Enumclaw’s Fourth of July parade, where students were honored as grand marshals after winning an essay contest about the nation’s 250th birthday.

That commitment will extend beyond the initial entry plan. Wenzel intends to maintain a visible presence in schools and throughout the community while continuing to invite conversation and feedback.
His leadership priorities include creating the conditions that help every student succeed, with an emphasis on quality teaching and strong leadership. By listening to a broad range of perspectives and connecting the district’s people, programs and priorities, Wenzel aims to build upon ESD’s strengths and support an extraordinary future for every student.

Learning from the community: Dr. Wenzel met with former Superintendent Jim Barchek, who served as ESD superintendent from 1986 to 1996, as part of his entry plan and community listening tour.
