District leaders and teachers invested time this month discussing powerful teaching and learning. School leaders examined strengths and areas for growth in student data—and connected School Improvement Plans to the District Improvement Plan with clear goals. “The direction and alignment really stand out,” said Westwood Principal Scott Meyer. “I’m excited for the work ahead.”
Teachers dedicated time to reviewing curriculum, teaching approaches and new tools in special education, literacy and math. The math training, called “Building Thinking Classrooms,” was brought back after teachers gave it top ratings last summer. It focuses on keeping students engaged, excited to learn, and thinking deeply through 14 teaching practices that research shows optimize math instruction.
The district’s 27-person leadership team spent three days earlier this month examining student achievement data, discussing effective instruction, and setting goals in math, reading, attendance, and graduation rates.
